As a small business owner, you can’t escape SEO and it’s not just for the big businesses anymore. It’s for anyone who has an online presence and wants to be visible to their potential customers/clients/target audience.
Before I dive into this post, I must say that SEO is a much larger topic than what I am about to break down. This post is so that you can start to understand what SEO is and can start implementing the strategy into your business growth model.
So what is SEO and how does it work especially for small business owners like you.
As you may already know, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization but what exactly are you optimizing?
Well, you are basically optimizing your chances of ranking (ie becoming more visible) on search engine results, it could be your website, a landing page even Instagram or Pinterest, in order to show up organically on the search results without having to pay for that traffic.
It’s more about what people are searching for
In a nutshell, it’s about understanding what your potential customers are searching for online. What solutions are they trying to find, what words are they using online when searching for solutions to their problems.
Knowing this will allow you to drive people to your online presence where you will essentially be offering them the solution they are looking for. So why is SEO so important?
If done right, SEO not only serves to increase traffic to your business over time, but it does so organically. So, as much as paid ads can also drive traffic to your website, this strategy will need you to continue to pay for the traffic. Whereas if you are driving customers to your business organically using SEO, then you will be saving money and also improve your ranking (i.e. showing up on page 1, 2, 3 etc. of the search results) on search engines.
SEO is all about helping your website rank higher in search engine results. And as a result, should drive more traffic to your website. However, this is just one element of SEO. You still need to ensure that once they get on your site, your content is clear about what you want them to do, i.e., buy from you, subscribe, comment, share etc.

The key things to look for with SEO
Remember, SEO is essentially about what people are searching for, but most importantly, it is about search intent. Search intent can generally be argued to fall under three types and these could be for:
- information – like how to use canva, or how to draft a business plan, etc..
- navigation – looking for a specific product or service like cleansers, lipstick etc.
- purchasing – this is where they are looking to buy something, i.e. the best cameras to buy in 2021, low priced website designers.
So you really need to get into the head of your ideal clients to find out what keywords they will be using to search for solutions that your business can solve.
