In order to create an effective social media strategy, you must understand that what works for someone else, may not necessarily work for you.
So just because ‘Stacy’ appears to be crushing it with her content, that doesn’t mean that copying her tactics will yield the same results for you.
However, there are keys things that you can put in place that will allow you to “crush it” as they say, with your social media content.
So, let’s get right into that.
1. You need to set goals for an effective social media strategy
Before you do anything on social media as a small business, you have to start with a goal. Don’t just have a goal in your mind, write it down and make sure it is a SMART goal.
If you don’t start your strategy with a goal, then you are just going to be doing things aimlessly and getting very frustrated when you are not seeing any results, trust me on this because I speak from experience.
This then leads you to a very dangerous space where you will end up jumping from one idea to the next. So, it will come as no surprise to you when you find yourself even more confused and you have lost focus on what you are actually trying to achieve with your social media content.
2. You need to know who your ideal customer for an effective social media strategy
If you follow me on social media (@_simplyseyi_) or have read some of my other posts (by the way if you haven’t you really should 😁), then you will know I talk a lot about your ‘Ideal Customer’. The reason I keep going on about it, is because it really is that important in order to create an effective social media strategy. Why? Well, because it plays a major role in how you create and put together your content for social media.
I have gone into a lot more detail about the importance of having a customer avatar and how to create one in 5 easy steps in my blog post How To Create Your Ideal Customer Avatar In 5 Easy Steps, so go check it out now.
3. You need to know where your ideal customers hang out
Now that you have a goal in mind and you know who you are targeting, it’s time to find out where your ideal customers hang out online. This is so that you can get your content right in front of them on a platform or in places where they are consuming information. For example, there is no point in posting on Instagram if your ideal customers are Linked in.
So, how can you find out where your ideal customers hang out online? There are a few ways to do this, to be honest, but the quickest way is to really get inside the head of your ideal customer. I don’t mean just briefly thinking about it but rather, really be your ideal customer. Identify their pain points/challenges and think to yourself, where would you then go to find solutions to your problems or engage with other people in a similar situation to get advice.
4. Create great content for an effective social media strategy
This is where the fun starts to happen. It’s time to create content that not only aligns with your goal (i.e. what are you trying to achieve with that content) but also appeals to your ideal audience, on a platform that allows you to be visible to them.
So, how do you create content that converts? Make sure to have these elements in your captions:
- Create a captivating title
- Make sure that the information correlates with the title using your brand voice
- Add a call to action (C.T.A)
- Use emoji’s (where appropriate)
- Use hashtags

5. You need to have KPIs (Key Performance Index)
Finally, to create an effective social media strategy, you need to put in place a way to measure the effectiveness of your efforts to achieve your goal through your social media content. The way you do this is by having key metrics that you use to measure the performance of your strategy. These are also known as your KPIs.
Why are KPIs important? Well, they help you monitor your efforts to see if you are actually meeting your goals. It helps you identify what you may need to change or double down on with your social media content, in order to achieve your goals.
I find that a lot of entrepreneurs completely forget about KPIs because they are so focused on creating the content and trying to make that sale, that they don’t take appreciate the importance of having KPIs. This step is just as important as creating great content because this helps you refine your strategy and develop tactics that are actually working for your business.
