3 Common Obstacles Stopping You From Your Success

Obstacles can be physical or mental. In this post, I want to look at the mental obstacles stopping you from achieving your goals. Have you ever had difficulty keeping a simple commitment to yourself, like eating more veg or getting up 5 minutes earlier just to pray? Can I hear a big YES!

Let’s be honest, the majority of people I know have found him or herself at some point wanting to do something, but they have been unable to do so. Have you ever wondered why you sometimes have that block? Not being able to connect your actions with your intentions? Well, when you really think about it, you can break it down to being that that our mind sees the obstacles first and comes up with every excuse as to why you can’t attain your goals.

So, even before we can initiate any action, we literally paralyze ourselves with some kind of obstacle we have created in our minds. And once your head begins to fill up with all the obstacles that could potentially keep you from achieving your newfound goal, suddenly your desire to even try is crushed.

Below, I am going to talk about 3 of the common obstacles we face that potentially stand in the way of our success, and how to overcome them so we can finally overcome the roadblocks we have created in our minds in order to reach our goals and be successful.

Common Obstacle #1 – I don’t have enough time

Let’s face it, we are all confined to an equal amount of time, the same 24 hours, yet some people find the time to achieve their goals and be successful. But check this out, individuals who achieve extraordinary levels of success have days just as hectic as you and I, they have also got commitments to work, friends, and family but yet, they are able to find the time to focus and achieve what they set out to do.


How do they do it? It’s simple really, they create time by planning ahead, so they have acknowledged this obstacle and they have chosen to address what they need to do to overcome it. So, one of the best time-creating techniques is to make a list of your daily “to-dos” of the most important tasks you want to accomplish each day.

Common Obstacle #2 – I don’t know what to do

I don’t know what to do with marketing my business, I don’t know what to do with my business finance, I don’t know what to have for lunch today 😊, I could literally go on. The problem here is that when you start thinking like this, you sometimes find it becomes a snowball effect, one obstacle leads to another then another and by the end of it, all you get left with is the feeling of confusion.

How do you deal with this obstacle? Invest in the knowledge of what you are lacking. I can’t say it enough, knowledge is power, the more you educate yourself about the things you don’t know, the more in control you will feel by gaining that knowledge.  This is where I differentiate the talkers from the doers.

The talkers are people who acknowledge the obstacle “that they don’t know what to do” but they make little to no efforts to do anything about it. It becomes like a crutch they can lean on when things pop up, their get out of jail card when it comes to making certain decisions.  But how far do you think that will take them in business, not very far I can guarantee you. Then we have the doers, the ones who also acknowledge the obstacle, but they understand that they need to invest their time and money to gain knowledge in the areas they are lacking, which will ultimately empower them to make informed decisions about their lives and their business.

So, what is the strategy to beating the “I don’t know what do to” obstacle? Take action and educate yourself in the areas you feel you are lacking and move on from confusion into clarity.

Common obstacle #3 – I hate goal setting

Goals come from having a clear vision of what you want. Knowing what you want is great but you need more than that, you need a statement so compelling it literally pulls you, like a magnet, in the direction of its achievement.

So, maybe you are not certain how to set effective goals? If that is you, then don’t worry, everyone starts off this way. In order to set and reach your goals whether it is in life or business, you should use the S.M.A.R.T. goal-setting technique. Not only will this technique enable you to set the most effective goals, it will help focus your efforts on exactly what you want to achieve.


S.M.A.R.T. stands for:

  • Specific – You need to be simple and clear, avoid being ambiguous
  • Measurable – You need to be able to measure your progress so you can judge when a goal will be met
  • Achievable / Action-oriented – you must be able to create an action list of things you must do to achieve success.
  • Realistic – you need to think about the resources and time available to you in order to achieve that financial goal.  Make certain your goal is realistic yet stretches you, given your expectations and time-frame.
  • Timely -you need to set a time frame to help keep you focused on your goal. A date forces you to give it priority and puts positive pressure on you to achieve it.
